 Kuch toh log kahenge

Prices of assets are bound to oscillate, people wish to sell at the top and buy at the best bottom, there are times when we as portfolio traders ( who trades on behalf of clients , or advice the clients over buying / selling the assets at specific prices ), when we sell at a price and the price appreciates even further beyond our selling price. This is hard for them to digest that their holding wasn't sold on the highest price, time and again we have to explain them that there are several factors regarding a sell trade such as :-

  • when we bought the asset we had a strategy over price movement, and derived a selling price prior to buying, and once the price arrives we sell it
  • from our long term experience we develop some sensitivity about the formation of candle sticks and we start being suspicious about the either side big movement ( it can be downside as well ) and if we don't sell at some profits , these same clients will come hunting for us demanding explanations regarding why we didn't book profits ...
  • even knowing that the upside move hasn't ended we sell at times just because we see an opportunity in some other asset which according to us can earn the client a little quicker or a little more than the current one.
  • The overall average cost of holding for the client might be coming to a very safer price if we sell partial quantity and thus it drives us to sell.... and so on ...there are several factors upon which we decide
  • and yes we decide on basis of the mentality and nature of clients as well ( not always )

This was for readers to have some  know how regarding why people sell and especially the professional traders, and also this is a fact that we portfolio managers are not Gods, unless we aren't selling in losses we are good to do with.

Now I have built myself in such a way that i don't pay any heed to what they say, most the times I don't even hear what they have to say, I stay aloof from conversations with such people, because I read a proverb once which says:

"A person who is in constant fear, makes you fear as well "
